Foster an expansive arts, culture and nightlife hub around Deer Lake Village
Partner with Indigenous Nations on re-developing existing RCMP and city hall lands to further reconciliation and co-creation of a sustainable shared future
Work with Translink to ensure easy access to all parts of the city with bus service from Deer Lake Village and look at rapid transit options as the area grows
Encourage local and culturally-relevant arts and culture facilities in each quadrant of the city to allow easy access for everyone
Work with existing facilities (such as Nikkei Centre) to create networks of arts and cultural spaces to share and support each other
Work with the Burnaby School Board to ensure the Michael J Fox Theatre remains a valuable public asset and arts space for south Burnaby
Expand public art programs, including ongoing work with different local artist to bring life and vibrancy to more public spaces with public art and murals
Create more local libraries and community centres to increase accessibility so 95% of Burnaby’s population is within 15 min walk by 2050
Ensure space in new facilities for local cultural aspects, art events, exhibits, and community meeting spaces
Explore more combined spaces that allow for libraries and elements of community centres to co-exist, with areas for play and games, physical movement and activity, sharing food, etc
Understanding the insufficient amount of recreation programs and spaces currently, investigate ways to make registration for programs easier for Burnaby residents and parents
Ensure every eligible resident is aware of Burnaby’s Fair Play program to provide lower income residents access community centres and other recreation activities
Residents with either a LIT pass should be able to easily access Burnaby’s Fair Play program for community centres and vice versa
Encourage, create, and develop free, accessible and welcoming public indoor and outdoor spaces to hangout, gather, facilitate social interaction, foster community, and improve mental health and well-being
Incorporate school planning directly into city plans and the Official Community Plan to ensure space is allocated beforehand for new schools, libraries, and community centres
Foster relationships between the city, school board, and developers to allow new community schools to be created as part of larger developments
Enable at least one year-round car free street in each town centre
Create a vibrant, welcoming community space for all to gather and enjoy through design and public art, working with local businesses and artists
