Ensure every street has a connected, accessible sidewalk within 5 years
As of 2019, 40% of streets in Burnaby lacked sidewalks on one or both sides. Some progress has been made since then, but far too slowly
Everyone deserves a safe and accessible option to walk or roll
Implement a 2 metre standard sidewalk width with more space in town centres to ensure safety and accessibility for all, and allow for easy re-purposing of space to make it more inviting and welcoming
Separate multi-use paths into wide sidewalks and protected bike lanes to prevent conflicts between people walking, rolling and driving to ensure the safety, accessibility and comfort for everyone
Re-design dangerous streets and intersections to ensure safety for all
May include continuous sidewalks and cycle tracks, raised crosswalks or intersections, narrowing vehicle lanes, providing better sight-lines at intersections, roundabouts, modal filters, reducing speed limits, prohibiting right turns on red and more
Use economical quick-build methods to roll-out safety improvements across the city quickly with a focus on most dangerous locations first
As repaving, utility work, etc is completed, utilize that existing work to provide permanent street safety features
Implement a permanent 30km/h speed limit on all neighbourhood streets and all streets around schools
Engage in an open, public process to develop neighbourhood or city-wide parking programs or permits that recognize the needs of residents and businesses as well as the limited availability and value of public curb space
Enable at least one year-round car free street in each town centre
Create a vibrant, welcoming community space for all to gather and enjoy through design and public art, working with local businesses and artists
Ensure lighting on streets and pathways, with a focus on pedestrian-scale lighting for new lighting
Prioritize the comfort and safety of people during darker times of the day
