Transparency and accountability are required to have the necessary public trust for Burnaby to operate efficiently and serve the needs of all who live here.
Ensure easy public access to a range of open data from the city
Work with other cities and the province to prevent duplication of effort and allow data to be easily compared
Create an easily accessible webpage for annual progress updates for city targets and goals, including information on the data collection and sources
This would include carbon emissions, street safety, progress on sidewalk and cycling networks, new housing approvals and completions, Burnaby Housing Authority, progress towards open technology standards and software, tree coverage, etc
Build upon recent efforts to streamline housing approvals to ensure new housing can efficiently move from planning to construction without undue delay
Direct staff to analyze ‘red-tape’ bottlenecks and prioritize hiring to reduce bottlenecks
Establish a clear process for ideas for improved efficiency from all staff, creating a system to encourage, collect, pilot, and implement beneficial ideas
Co-locate community facilities (libraries, community centres, fire stations, etc) with new housing when re-developing existing city assets or building new locations
Maximize the use of city-land, create more non-market housing, and allow easy new residents to easily access community facilities
Push for more cost-effective and reliable elevators
Strongly advocate for the province to adopt international elevator standards and encourage new market entrants in BC
Prohibit mandatory exclusivity deals for maintenance and repair of city elevators to encourage greater competition
Adopt a consistent and transparent measurement based criteria for land use policy
Possible examples include private land having a net-positive tax base (taxes contributed vs. services consumed) or employment opportunities per acre
Public land use shall prioritize number of residents served. Exact criteria to be determined but will always aim to maximize public benefit
Commit to no more than 12 years (3 terms) as a Burnaby City Councillor to allow for space for new, diverse, and younger voice to be represented and bring new ideas
Burnaby is a diverse city with people from all ages and backgrounds. That diversity needs be represented in our elected council, not career politicians
